Sep 2000 to Jun 2005 : Cardiff University
Studied civil engineering degree which involved modules using Neural Networks (NN), Genetic Algorithms (GA), Finite Element Methods (FEM) to solve problems in hydraulics and structural analyses. Also studied Visual Basic programming.
Developed an application for the analyses of tidal waves entering an estuary. Paper was nominated for Science Engineering & Technology Awards 2005.
EXPERIENCE - CIVIL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Feb 2007 to Present : Halcrow - CLRL Crossrail , North Woolwich Portal, Limmo Shaft
Design development, co-ordination and detailing for North Woolwich Portal, which is an exit structure to bring tunnels up from under the river Thames to ground level. Also did preliminary design for two shafts for Edinburgh Airport Rail Link. As design engineer responsible for development of the design of North Woolwich Portal to Scheme Design (GRIP stage 3 & RIBA D). I carried out Concrete and Steel design of diaphragm walled, sheet/ secant piled box structures and headhouse buildings to British and Euro codes. Was involved in constructability issues, assessing environmental impacts (Noise, Visual, Flooding), Space proofing of railway structures, development of Final Land Acquisition Boundaries, mitigation against flooding and risk assessments. I carried out a design options review using the Guidance on the Methodology for Multi-Modal Studies (GOMMMS) published by the Department of Transport (DfT) and the Transport Analysis Guidance web site (WebTAG). I considered of operational reliability, operation & maintenance costs, environmental impacts, capital costs and safety risks in the review process.
Aug 2005 to Jan 2007: Costain – CTRL St Pancras Station Redevelopment (Contract 105)
Temporary Works Designer on major new build and refurbishment project. Designed falsework for large concrete elements and temporary works for complex refurbishment works, Checked existing structure for temporary loading. Liaised with construction team and developed work sequences. Developed a 2D structural frame analysis program.
Jul 2004 to Sep 2004: Costain - CTRL St Pancras Station Redevelopment (Contract 105)
Vacation work at St Pancras. Worked with the reinforcement coordination team. The role of the coordination team was to facilitate the design process by coordinating information between different parties involved in the design process and responding to requests for information from the parties. My role in the team was to review drawings produced by Pell Frischmann and raise any queries. Developed a macro in Visual Basic for managing the drawings being coordinated by the team.
Jul 2002 - Aug 2003: Costain – CTRL Barrington Road Shafts (Contract 240)
Industrial placement programme with Costain. Main responsibilities included setting out, surveying and Quality Assurance. Carried out surveying and setting out. Produced method statements which involved collecting information and discussing ideas with other team members. Inspection of the works and record keeping were also part of the role.
This experience developed my awareness of the link between academic and practical skills. It gave me an insight into the importance of health and safety issues relating to others and myself.
EXPERIENCE - OTHER
July 01 - September 01
Worked as Sales Assistant at a Pharmacy shop in Ghana.
Responsibilities included input of sales, processing of sales data and dealing with
customers. This made me more aware of the importance of structure and order in
work.
Sep 96 - Dec 96
Spent a holiday on a site with an
electrical engineering company doing wiring and installation of electrical
equipment. Got experience of using electric drills and saws. I established
strong, productive and enjoyable working relationships with colleagues.
Oct 98 - Sep 99
I was Project manager of the Science
Club at Secondary School. I enjoyed co-ordinating research and experimental
activities. As an effective team worker, I initiated research work on radio
transmitters and a tree-naming project. I learned to optimise the use of time.
Managing time effectively doing the right thing and efficiently doing things
the right way.
SKILLS
ANALYTICAL
Enjoy problem solving and
possess quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques developed from
experience with statistical data analysis and research work.
Strong mathematical
background with a record of good performance as a result of keen attention to
detail ensuring accurate and thorough logical analysis
MANAGEMENT
Able to meet deadlines.
Does not underestimate the importance of quality. Capacity for hard work in the
face of difficulties.
ORGANISATIONAL
Ability to plan activities.
Make sure requirements to carry out an activity are met before the day of the
activity. Prioritise tasks and plan ahead.
COMPUTING
Highly computer literate
with a wide range of experience across general office and specialist software
packages and databases.
Gained experience in using
AutoCAD with COSTAIN doing site drawings. I have a huge interest in computer
programming. The use of computer programs to solve engineering problems and
using Information Technology to improve efficiency at work are my main interests.
I have designed a personal web site. Some of the packages I have used include,
AutoCAD, Excel, Dreamweaver, Paint shop Pro, MathCad, Basic, Word, Visual Basic
6.0, STAAD/Pro-QSE Version 5.1a.
I am very keen on computer programming. Especially using computer programmes to solve engineering problems. Some of the engineering problems I have developed computer software for include continuous beam analysis using the matrix stiffness method and slip circle analysis. I have several projects still under development and I'm looking to build a good library of projects. One of my current interests is the integration of 3d visual modelling with engineering solutions. Example use of 3d modelling to predict and solve buildability issues with reinforcement before the construction stage. I am currently using my computer programming skills to model tidal currents in the fleet lagoon near Weymouth. This is part of my Final year Project.
INTERESTS
Mountain biking. Using
cycle trails to explore and view places of interest in the countryside. I took
part in the London to Brighton Bike ride last year(58miles). I also play a lot
of chess. I recently took part in the Cardiff Marathon.
Electronics. One of my personal
achievements at Secondary school was to design and build an audio amplifier.
Student member of the
Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
